Radon
Radon is a colorless, odorless element which occurs naturally in the Earth. It seeps up from the ground and can accumulate in a crawl space, basement, or dwelling. It has been linked to cancer in humans.
Testing involves leaving one or more small canisters in the living space for several days, after which the cannister(s) are examined by a laboratory. There is an acceptable level of radon established by the U.S. Government. Reduction of Radon levels is by ventilation.
Certain parts of the Triangle are more conducive to finding Radon, especially in rocky soil. Radon in a basement could be more serious than in a crawl space where people rarely venture. Ask your home inspector for his/her recommendation concerning whether to spend about $100 for this test.
